挟 combines 扌, a hand, with 夹 jiā, which means carrying something clamped under the arm; that part carries both meaning and sound. It first meant gripping something from both sides, then grew to forcing or coercing someone. Read jiā, it keeps the plain sense of gripping from both sides.
