赛 joins 𡨄 sài, offerings to the gods, with 贝, shellfish or money, giving the first meaning of sacrificial offerings. 𡨄 also supplies the sound. From offerings it grew to a contest of strength or skill, then to competition. 贝 replaces 貝 in Simplified by a cursive shortcut.
