证 joins 讠 speech, language as the meaning part with 正 zhèng, 'to correct', which is both a meaning part and the sound part. Its first meaning was 'to correct, admonish'. From there it grew to 'to prove' and 'evidence'. The meaning 'illness' was borrowed for the sound alone.
