觉 pairs 学 without 子 xué, which supplies the sound, with 见 to see. Seeing brings the first sense: to realize, moving from not knowing to knowing. Read jué, it grew to 'perceive' and 'awaken'. Read jiào, it also means 'to sleep', shortened from 睡觉.
