苏

苏 is a shorthand for 蘇. It keeps 艹 vegetation and an empty part 办, which stands for the old sound part 穌. The first meaning was a kind of plant. The sense “to revive” was borrowed by sound, then grew to “wake up”; the character also shortens Jiangsu and Suzhou by sound.
