笑 was once made of grass, 𥫗 from 艹, and dog, 夭 from 犬. Early texts use it for 'to smile from joy'. One scholar suggests the old sense may be the joy dogs feel on a grassy field. 夭 yāo now supplies the sound, and the meaning grew to 'laugh'.
