会 is a shortened form of 會, which first meant 'to gather'. In the old form, one part meant 'to meet, gather' and also gave the sound; 亼 and 𠫔 are empty in the modern shape. The meaning grew to 'meeting', 'organization', 'to understand', and 'to be able to'.
